PLANETARY Kp INDEX — WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Kp ACTIVITY LEVEL VISIBLE SOUTH TO
0–2 Quiet ~70°N — Tromsø, Lapland always
3 Unsettled ~65°N — Fairbanks, Yellowknife, Reykjavik
4 Active ~60°N — southern Norway, northern Canada

Kp is a global index — one value for the entire Earth, averaged from ~13 magnetometer stations at 44–60°N geomagnetic latitude. It does not vary by location. Each city has a minimum Kp threshold at which the auroral oval expands far enough equatorward to be visible there. Source: GFZ Potsdam / NOAA SWPC.
